Love is an elusive thing. Some people will spend their entire lives in search of it, only to find that the problem was that they didn’t even know what they were searching for! As a man preparing for marriage, the concept of love is not lost on me. A wedding has become a universal symbol for “love” but then sadly, many marriages end in divorce. The problem is that the word is not properly defined for most people.
What does love mean to you? Most people will say that they feel loved when others make them feel good. And so, in search of love, they seek out to find people who make them feel good. What they are really seeking though is not love but selfishness!
They were not entirely wrong however, true love will make people feel good, but there is one key difference. True love is a decision, that no matter what another person does to you, you will treat them with respect and serve them and their needs at your own personal cost.
In essence, true love is a self sacrificing of yourself towards others.
Because this love is something that you can personally and consciously choose, you can find true love in your life, and as you love others unconditionally you will find yourself loved back.
Christ showed his love for us by dying on the cross for someone who constantly messes up and begs forgiveness (me!). When Jesus came to earth, he wasn’t looking for people to make him feel good, he was looking to serve the needs of others. And because he loved us, we love him.
1Jn 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.
Now in order to complete this love, we need to love Jesus back. There is only one way to do this:
Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Love God by doing what he says even if it costs you. This is true love.
