That doesn’t make sense! Right? I think one of the most prevalent stereotypes of God (especially among young people) is that His rules are nothing but, “thou shalt not have fun”. I think almost every child has had this point of view from one time or another. Really though rules help us have more fun in life – especially God’s rules.
Think about it this way, rules are like a choice that God is presenting to us. It’s a choice because we are not required to obey the rule. Let’s use an example from the very first rule ever made. In the garden of Eden, God said that adam and eve could eat of every tree of the field except the one of the knowledge of good and evil. What may not be obvious though is that God wasn’t trying to keep them from enjoying the tree. He was trying to keep them from creating a colossal mess that would ultimately require God’s own son to die on the cross for us.
Essentially they were choosing between these two scenarios:
- Live in a perfect sinless word forever enjoying the wonders of God’s creation (and his direct fellowship) or…
- Live in a sin cursed world where toil, pain, and suffering are inevitable and inescapable cut off from direct fellowship with God.
Which one would you pick? God wasn’t trying to keep them from having fun, he was trying to keep them from choosing option number two!
When we choose to give up something small (bad dress, rock music, movies, etc…) God is helping us to have fun with something big!
Think about that next time you feel that God’s rules are oppressive and you’ll realize that standards from the Bible will help you have more fun in life then you ever could have imagined.

I suggest you pick up a book called “choice theory”. You kind of independently stumbled on some of his secular assumptions.
