How do all these things go together? Well really they don’t, but God blessed me with some insight on these topics this morning as I read through Proverbs and Psalms.
Pro 13:20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
The people that we associate with have a great deal of influence on us whether we want to admit it or not. The power of peer pressure has caused many well intentioned folks to end up in destitue, in prison, or even dead! But God made us to be easily influenced by other people for a reason. He wants us to choose good and wise people to hang out with so that we can lift each other up and have an easy time doing right. So the warning is that companions of fools will end up with destruction, but the blessing is that if we choose wise company, we will reap the benefits of righteous living.
Psa 13:6 I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.
I think that it is interesting that the Bible tells us to sing unto the Lord to thank him. God likes to hear us sing! Even if we are not good at singing! It’s good to thank the Lord, but sometimes we need to sing and let Him know how joyful we are that he has blessed us.
Psa 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
Lastly, I want to point out that when we serve the Lord with our music, it is important to God that we play skillfully. Practicing and learning and instrument shows that you want to offer God your very best with your music. The more skillfully we play the more effect we can have on others as they listen to the music. God wants us to practice and be good at what we play! This is encouraging to me as I am learning to play the guitar.
